FLORENCE, Ala. – Drunk Driver Who Killed Man in Florence Sentenced to 5 Years. The woman who killed a man in a drunk driving accident in Lauderdale County in May 2018 will spend the next five years in prison.

Audrey White was sentenced on Friday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with the death of 61-year-old Milton Thompson.

Police say White was under the influence when her SUV hit Thompson’s motorcycle. Prosecutors said she had a blood-alcohol level of .19 which was over the legal limit of 0.08.

White started her prison sentence right away. When she is released, she will be on probation for five years.

More than a year ago, officers responded to the accident at the intersection of Florence Blvd. and Glendale Avenue at 10:10 p.m. Thompson, a resident of Florence, was found on the street and taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital.  He later succumbed to his injuries.

White was uninjured but she seemed to be impaired. Police later charged her with manslaughter, and she was taken to the Lauderdale Co. Detention Center.

Statistics show just how much drunk drivers put the lives of other road users in Alabama at risk. Security review site SafeWise ranked the state’s roads among the most dangerous in the country since it had the fifth-highest number of drunk-driving deaths in 2017.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded 268 drunk-driving fatalities which equate to 5.49 fatalities per 100,000 residents. Only Wyoming, South Carolina, North Dakota, and New Mexico ranked higher.
