Birmingham, AL – Four people were taken to hospital last Saturday night after a Birmingham crash during a police pursuit in Five Points West.

The crash occurred around 10 p.m. along Bessemer Road in front of the Crossplex. The Sheriff’s Neighborhood Enforcement Team of Jefferson County was at the time pursuing a suspect who had outstanding warrants.

Deputy Chief David Agee said the officers were accompanied by a crew from the TV show Live PD.

The suspect’s name has not been released but it was revealed that he was wanted on theft and drug charges.

Agee said deputies lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle and then he reportedly accelerated through the red light at the Five Points West intersection. He crashed into an oncoming motorist and this led to a chain reaction that involved more wrecks.

Seven vehicles were damaged, several of them extensively.

Charles Smith, an eyewitness, said he was standing at the Bessemer Road bus stop when the crashes happened a few feet away.

He said the suspects’ car was “basically obliterated” and the car was breaking up as it moved. He recalled hiding behind the bus stop because debris was flying at him.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Battalion Chief Sebastian Carrillo indicated that four people had to be taken to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Center. One of them had serious injuries but the other victims’ conditions were not immediately known.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is handling the investigation.
